What's really happening to your skin after 45 - and what to do about it

The biology is real, the changes are significant, and most skincare wasn't designed for them. Here's the honest science - and why we built something different.

Your skin after 45 is not the same skin.
Here's exactly what changes.

Most skincare is formulated with a 35-year-old in mind. But from perimenopause onwards, something fundamental shifts - and if you've noticed your skin changing faster than products can keep up with, the biology explains why.

Collagen production slows sharply

Oestrogen plays a direct role in collagen synthesis. As oestrogen levels decline through perimenopause, skin loses structural support - contributing to sagging, the deepening of lines, and a loss of bounce that no amount of OTC moisturiser can rebuild on its own.

The skin barrier becomes more fragile

Ceramide production declines and the moisture barrier weakens. Skin becomes thinner, drier, and more reactive - meaning ingredients that felt fine at 38 can suddenly cause redness, tightness, or irritation. This is why retinol becomes harder to tolerate, not easier.

Cell turnover slows significantly

In your 20s, skin cells renew roughly every 28 days. By your 50s, that cycle can stretch to 45–60 days. Dullness, uneven texture, and persistent pigmentation are all partly driven by this slowdown - skin that isn't clearing and renewing at the rate it once did.

Elastin fibres degrade without being replaced

Elastin - the protein that allows skin to spring back - degrades continuously after your mid-30s and production slows dramatically. Sun exposure accelerates this. The result is skin that doesn't recover as quickly from expression, sleep, or environmental stress.

"For too long, skincare has asked us to choose between performance and peace of mind. The biological changes of mature skin require a different approach - not more aggressive ingredients, but smarter ones."

Professor Richard Blackburn, Co-Founder, System Nature™

Retinol was designed to address some of these changes - specifically cell turnover and collagen stimulation. And it works. The problem is the mechanism: retinol accelerates skin activity in a way that mature, barrier-compromised skin often can't handle. The side effects aren't rare. For women over 45, they're the rule.

How System Nature Technology™
delivers the results without the damage

We don't start with synthetic compounds and try to make them gentler. We start with what nature already provides and use advanced science to unlock its full potential. Professor Blackburn and Professor Rayner identified bioactive compounds that trigger the same gene expression pathways as retinol - without the retinoid mechanism that causes irritation.

Standard extraction processes degrade active compounds. Our proprietary green extraction method - developed at the University of Leeds and funded by Innovate UK - uses only natural solvents to preserve maximum ingredient purity. This is not incremental improvement. It is a fundamentally different approach to botanical extraction.

In System Nature Technology™, ingredients are selected and sequenced to work in harmony - creating a cumulative effect at a cellular level that no single ingredient achieves alone. The three products in the starter kit are designed to be used together: each step prepares skin for the next, and the combined system delivers results that go beyond what any individual product can produce.

Independent clinical studies published in the British Journal of Dermatology and the International Journal of Cosmetic Science confirm that our active compounds deliver retinol-comparable results through retinol-like regulation of gene expression - without any of the undesirable effects of retinol. This isn't a brand claim. It's peer-reviewed evidence.

What to expect, and when

Day 2 - Hydration you can feel

82% of consumer trial testers reported their skin felt more hydrated after just two days of use - faster than any of our clinical data predicted. The cleansing balm in particular received consistent feedback about how skin felt immediately after cleansing: clean, comfortable, and not tight.

Week 2 - Texture and glow begin to shift

86% of testers said their skin felt more nourished within two weeks. Several noted an improvement in overall radiance and skin quality that they described as "glowing" - a visual brightness that comes from improved hydration and the early stages of cellular renewal.

Week 8 - Pigmentation starts to even

57% of testers reported more even skin pigmentation at eight weeks - a result that typically requires prescription-strength intervention with retinol. The moisturiser's action on melanin regulation becomes increasingly visible at this stage.

Week 12 - The full clinical picture

90% average improvement in roughness and dryness. 39% average increase in skin firmness. 46% improvement in eye area appearance. These are the numbers from independent clinical trials - the same standard of evidence that prescription retinoids are held to.
